A Five-Star, Experienced Author

Mary has spoken at hundreds and hundreds of schools with glowing reviews. She believes in the inherent worth of every individual and believes everyone has stories to tell. Around the country and internationally, Mary makes meaningful connections with her audiences. Warm, approachable, and easy-going, Mary is passionate about reading and writing and puts 100% into every program, making each presentation engaging, educational, and fun. (Sometimes she brings puppets!)

A K-12 Author with Award-winning books

The author of 38 books—picture books, chapter books, middle-grade, and historical YA novels—Mary effectively speaks across grade levels. She tailors her programs to each group, drawing on her wide range of work. She is equally comfortable engaging with a group of Kindergarteners as she is with 10th graders. Readers of all ages often say they "love" Mary's books and "can't put them down."

An Author with Writing Tips Teachers LOVE

Mary illuminates the writing process by sharing: 1) the stories behind her stories; 2) writing from experience 3) research as a path to any topic 4) facing and overcoming writer's block 5) using the five senses 6) creating strong beginnings 7) the necessity of revision . . . and more! When students leave her presentations, they often ask their teacher if they can start writing their own stories. Yes!

An Author for BOTH Boys and Girls

Mary is an acclaimed author for American Girl, and she's also popular with American boys. Moose Tracks and Wolf Shadows, two of her earlier books, continue to find incredible success with hard-to-reach boy readers.

One Author for All Students

Mary inspires and motivates audiences of all learning styles and levels. She shares about growing up in a family of ten kids, not feeling heard, and how writing became her "voice." She shares about her struggles as a can't-sit-still-reader and how finding the right book made all the difference. She admits to hundreds of rejections along her path to getting published and the importance of working hard and never giving up.

“The breadth of Mary Casanova’s writing is surpassed only by her warm demeanor and genuine love of kids and teachers. We felt privileged when she agreed to speak at our conference … and the response from our audience made it clear she was an excellent choice!”

“At the recent state reading association conference with attendance over 1200, author Mary Casanova was an engaging keynote speaker.
In addition, she spoke for several breakout sessions and the final luncheon. As you learn to know Casanova the author and any of the 31 titles she has written, you quickly learn about her talent and diverse interests and expertise. Educators were drawn to her sessions and would agree that she is impressive in the smaller writing classes in addition to the large general session. Ms. Casanova is genuinely captivating.”

“Thank you for being a keynote speaker doing breakout sessions at our 2014 NDRA Spring Reading Conference. The “energy” of your presentations were contagious and brought smiles to faces and were being talked about, up and down the halls. There was a lot of talk from educators across North Dakota about the wonderful professional development they were offered. Granite Bay, California

Mary Casanova's presentation at Ridgeview Elementary school in Granite Bay, California included every element needed for a perfect school Author Day. Mary's ability to interactively engage the students was masterful. Her multi dimensional approach, using an overview of writing basics with an emphasis on the importance of incorporating personal experience and thorough research, was brilliant. Our school has a notable history of visits by excellent authors with Mary Casanova on our list of the most highly recommended. Her superb presentation motivates children to develop their writing skills and will inspire them to have a life long love of reading.

I've noticed a lot of “dialogue” lately about author school visits so I wanted to share our recent experience. I couldn’t wait to let everyone on LM-NET know about an awesome guest author we were privileged to host last week. Mary Casanova is from northern Minnesota, is reasonably priced and has a variety of published books including a folktale and another picture book as well as several outstanding chapter books to appeal to 3rd grade up to 8th. Our staff was so impressed with her outstanding rapport with the kids that they have asked me to reschedule her in a couple of years! We have a guest author in our school every year, but Mary was one of the best. If you're looking for a great author visit, check out Mary Casanova []. You won’t be disappointed!

International School, Paris, France

[Our 4th and 5th grade international school students] enjoyed hearing about her childhood and seeing photos. Since many had never visited the United States, she was careful to be aware of cultural differences and explain things the children might not be familiar with. They were captivated when she recounted the many personal experiences that became chapters in the books. They appreciated the fact that she had to remain confident and persistent in order to attain her goal of being a published children's author. Her booksigning was very personal and the best I have ever seen. She took time to speak to each child and they, in turn, felt so special and inspired to write. Her books were never on the shelves for long and, now, even a year later, they still recall her visit in detail.
